Dear
Mr. Minister
Re security situation: Hercules police area
I am
writing you this letter to bring to your attention an
urgent matter of safety and security. Fully aware that
you must have quite a hectic schedule and on that
account I have no intention to pester you. However, my
complaint is of such a nature that I do not see my way
open to take up the matter with either the Station
Commissioner of Hercules or the National Commissioner of
the SAPD for obvious reasons.
The area
of Hercules has experienced a spate of armed robberies
and violent attacks on white people resulting in deaths
and serious injuries.
Less
than a fortnight ago an elderly couple was attacked on
their plot by 5 black men some of them wearing police
uniforms. It would appear that a police vehicle may
also have been involved - I am not sure whether this is
a fact.
On July
25, 2007 an armed robbery took place at a supermarket,
Deals Family Store, Claremont, Pretoria. Five armed
robbers were involved and a number of white persons were
killed or injured. According to a local newspaper,
Record of August 3rd,2007, in respect of this
robbery the following was reported:
"The
owner of the supermarket, Mr Gerrie Oosthuizen, told
Rekord a police reservist warned him three to four hours
before robbers stormed in, that a robbery was going to
take place.
"'The
reservist said he could not call for police assistance
as he was not yet trained to patrol the streets,' said
an angry Oosthuizen."
What I
actually want to bring to your attention is the
following according to the newspaper:
"Superintendent Thembiso Mpungose, from the Hercules
police expressed concern that police members may have
been assisting the robbers in the attack."
This
sir, is a very serious situation coming from the
Commander of the police station. I am quite convinced
that you will not accept a situation like this.
I have
no intention of telling you what to do but accept that
you will look into the matter. Please accept that this
is an open letter to you and as we have a public duty
toward our constituents this letter is being made public
immediately.
Furthermore it has become imperative that, to secure our
own safety and security we are forced to form patrols
and prepare structures of our own to do just that. This
is being done in line with our Constitution and to
ensure where we have no police protection something is
being done about our safety and security.
Kind regards
Piet Rudolph
